Yesterday I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to appraise a 4000 square foot condo at the St. Elisabeth's building on Napoleon Avenue. St. Elisabeth's was built as a boarding school in the 1860's and later in the 1870's was turned into an orphanage. Before becoming condos, author Ann Rice purchased the building and utilized part of it as her residence. The building is a magnificent Second Empire brick four story building with a mansard roof. In addition, it is almost 47,000 square feet with a site an entire block of Napoleon Avenue. The building is now a designated historic landmark and is well known and revered in New Orleans. Although the building is huge, the project has only 27 units, as many of the units are very large. Large plaster angels and Corinthian Columns still flank the entrance of St. Elizabeth's and the interior hall is marble with statues of saints presiding. Of course, as you might imagine, the condo was also magnificant with 14 foot ceilings, wonderful millwork such as windows and doors that stand to the height of the ceilings, wide plank heart pine flooring and plaster crown molding. The unit also had plenty of exposed brick which can be kind of unique in New Orleans as most homes are built with wood.
